ORGANIZATIONSYOUTH SPORTS Black Hills Gold Swim Team The Black Hills Gold Swim Team focuses on USS Age Group Competitive Swimming for ages 5-19. The Summer Long Course Season runs from May through August and the Winter Short Course Season runs from October through March. Practices and area tournaments start in January and conclude with a youth state tournament in March. Registrations begin in November. Online registrations are available beginning in August. The girls’ season runs September & October with registrations closing the first week of September. The boys’ season runs November & December with registrations closing the second week of October. Web Address: www.spearfishyouthbasketball.com Spearfish Tennis Association The purpose of the Spearfish Tennis Association is to promote and encourage the game of tennis in Spearfish and the Northern Hills through adult and youth leagues, tournaments and lessons, and through recreational and competitive opportunities. Contact: Kent Meyers, President Spearfish Youth Baseball & Softball Association The Spearfish Youth Baseball & Softball Association program is designed to teach youth the fundamentals of baseball and softball. Registrations can be found online the end of February and early March. T-Ball and Machine Pitch start in the beginning of June and runs for 6 weeks. Majors and Minors start in the end of May and play until July. Softball starts mid-May and runs through mid-July. Web Address: www.sybsa.net Spearfish Youth Football Association The mission of the Spearfish Youth Football Association is to teach youth the fundamentals of football, sportsmanship and teamwork. The SYFA provides flag football for 3rd and 4th grade and tackle football for 5th and 6th grade. The seasons generally run from mid-August through mid-October. Registrations can be found online and are usually available around July 1st. Soccer seasons include Fall Outdoor Soccer, Spring Outdoor Soccer and Winter Indoor Soccer. Web Address: www.spearfishsoccer.com YOUTH ACTIVITIES Hershey’s Track & Field Games The Hershey’s Track & Field Games was created to promote physical fitness, participation, friendship and sportsmanship through basic track and field events such as running, jumping and throwing. The Games has been a national event for over thirty years and is the largest youth sports program of its kind in North America. At the Hershey’s Track & Field Games, no matter how fast they run, how long they jump or how far they throw, every child is a winner! Registrations for youth ages 9-14 will be available online in April through the Spearfish Rec Center with the Games held in May. Activities include games, hiking, biking, arts and crafts, sports, bowling, swimming and outdoor education. Come have fun and make friends! Registrations will be available in March online through the Spearfish Rec Center. Summer Rec runs for 8 weeks through June and July. From the very beginning, Girl Scouts has been about developing girl’s leadership abilities. In 4-H, you can learn new skills like taking photographs, cooking snacks, using computers, caring for pets, building model rockets or kites, growing flowers and vegetables, drawing or painting, fishing and making crafts. 4-H has more than 100 learn-by-doing projects. 4-H projects are challenging, but practical and fun ways to learn. Web Address: www.4h.sdstate.edu YouthWise YouthWise is a local non-profit community based accredited organization providing prevention, transition and diversion services to over 2,775 youth annually in Lawrence County. The YouthWise Diversion program, for youth referred because of alcohol or other drug experimentation, has been recognized by the United States Department of Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA). YouthWise is just one of 40 programs in the nation to receive this recognition and this is an example of their organizational commitment to excellence and a commitment to healthy expectations for our youth. Women’s 5-on-5 and Men’s 3-on-3 Basketball leagues run six weeks from early-January through mid-February. Registrations for Basketball Leagues are available online through the Spearfish Rec Center. The annual captain’s meeting (which can be attended by anyone) is typically held the first Wednesday in April. Contact: Kent Meyers, President ADULT ACTIVITIES Northern Hills Senior Games The Northern Hills Senior Games is a regional Olympic-style sports festival for adult athletes (ages 50+). Senior Games events include walking, running, basketball, bean bag toss, bowling, cycling, golf, jump rope, shuffleboard, swimming, table tennis, track & field, pinochle and bridge. The NHSG are held mid-May with registrations available online through the Spearfish Rec Center in April. Web Address: www.spearfishparksandrec.com ADULT ORGANIZATIONS BHSU-RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) The mission of RSVP is to engage persons 55 years and older in volunteer service to meet critical community needs and to provide a high quality of experience that will enrich the lives of the volunteers. RSVP connects anyone who would like to volunteer in their community with non-profit agencies that need volunteer help. Volunteers can serve as many or as few hours as preferred and there is no cost to participate. Make a difference in your community today!
